Description
Simpsons Crystal Medium Malt is a world-class British caramel malt that imparts a beautiful deep amber color and complex notes of sweet toffee, caramel, and subtle dried fruit. Kilned to approximately 50-60° Lovibond, it provides enhanced body and foam stability while contributing a distinct “malty” richness. It is the essential specialty grain for traditional English Bitters, Pale Ales, and Brown Ales, helping to balance hop bitterness with a smooth, lingering sweetness.
Brewery Mash Tip: Use Crystal Medium at 5-15% of the total grist. Because the sugars are already caramelized inside the kernel, this malt does not require mashing for sugar conversion (it can be steeped), but including it in the main mash provides the best integration of color and body. It pairs exceptionally well with Fuggle or Golding hops to create a classic British profile.
